Central New York Waterfalls
This area contains one of the densest collections of waterfalls in all of New York State. Formed when the edge of the great Wisconsin glacier retreated some ten thousand years ago, it created the Finger Lakes and carved this area into numerous glens, hanging valleys and ravines.

The local slogan "Ithaca is Gorges" may be known worldwide but when one actually spends time in the Ithaca chasms it forms a lasting image of a place that exists only in the mind, as any aerial photo of Ithaca will show. The beauty of the area attracted film producers in the silent-film era. In later years, 'Cayuga Productions' would be formed, hosted by Ithaca native Rod Serling and his famous 'Twilight Zone' series.

Four gorges dominate the area. Fall Creek and Cascadilla Gorge define the north and south periphery of the Cornell University campus. Lick Brook, which contains numerous free and cascading plumes, is a trail on the property managed by Cornell Plantations and Finger Lakes Land Trust Preserve, just south of the university. Nearby Six Mile Creek is another beautiful area full of hiking trails. Numerous other falls are found in tributaries of our lakes and rivers all over the area.

Did you know? Taughannock Falls, on the west side of Cayuga Lake, is the highest free-falling plume in the Northeastern United States -- and 33' higher than Niagara Falls.
